Saltstraumen Bodø

Saltstraumen

Just 33 kilometers from Bodø city center lies Saltstraumen, one of the world’s most impressive natural wonders. Here, you can witness the strongest tidal current on Earth, where massive volumes of water are forced through a narrow strait between the Saltenfjord and Skjerstadfjord.

Every six hours, the tide shifts, sending water rushing through the 3-kilometer-long and 150-meter-wide channel at speeds of up to 20 knots. This creates powerful whirlpools that can reach up to 10 meters in diameter and several meters deep – a dramatic and fascinating sight.

Saltstraumen is at its most intense around new and full moon, when the difference between high and low tide is greatest. Plan your visit during these periods to experience this natural phenomenon at its peak.
